I adore city life, despite most of my writing being focused on the countryside and the mountains. It provides a thrilling, intimate examination of people and movement. I spent six years living in New York City, and while I hope to add more to it eventually, Chengdu is unforgettable in too many ways. There are more than a few components of Chengdu I wish I could bring over to NYC, or any American city quite honestly. But that’s not realistic. Tend to the garden you can touch.
The first time I recall visiting Chengdu, I was 10 or 11 years old. If only I took photos back then. This post is really just my favorite photos from my most recent trip, September – October 2024. Worthwhile pictures? You be the judge.
Not much else needs to be written by me, Chengdu is a huge place, with many sights and attitudes. There is no shortage of Chengdu stories and perspectives to find online.
During daytime. In streets and alleys, by vast waterways, in lively parks, tranquil paths, colorful markets, quiet neighborhoods, active quarters.

At night. The city doesn’t stay awake and rowdy nearly as late as NYC, but there is often a glow.

I would be remiss to not include a section on architecture. Not always neat or consistent, but always interesting, I’d say.

This is a very limited view of Chengdu. Despite spending weeks here (and many more in the past), I find myself in the same spots much of the time. There are so many areas, outskirts that I never reached, or barely experienced.
I aim to have more up here soon… back in the countryside (and on the topic of Qiang), of course. If you’re reading this, thank you for checking out my stuff.
